  • Tapping Ohio's Potential

Tapping Ohio's Potential is a statewide coalition of business, education and community leaders who share the belief that Ohio must do a better job of preparing and nurturing its talent base if our state is to compete successfully in a global economy. The coalition's is guided by a commitment to help Ohio achieve two critical goals:

    • Ensure that all high school graduates in Ohio are ready for college, work and citizenship
    • Double the number of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) graduates with bachelor's degrees by 2015.

In order to accomplish these goals, the TOP coalition supports passage of the Ohio Core legislation.

The Ohio Core will require all students in Ohio, beginning with the high school graduation class of 2011, to complete a rigorous core curriculum as a requirement for admission into any of Ohio's four-year, state-assisted institutions of higher education. Specifically, the Ohio Core will require:

    • Four years of math, including Algebra II
    • Three years of science, including biology, chemistry and physics
    • Two years of foreign language

Schools will not be required to provide more units for graduation, just units focused on disciplines we know students need for success.

The link between rigor and opportunity is clear. Students who complete a rigorous core curriculum in high school have more choices and greater opportunities, and are more likely to be ready for college, work and citizenship.

Tapping Ohio's Potential is an independent, nonpartisan Ohio not-for-profit corporation affiliated with the Ohio Business Roundtable and organized in accordance with Section 501(c)(4) of the Internal Revenue Code.
